Understanding the Fool's Journey
A break down of the Major Arcana tarot cards
Our brains are wired to remember stories because they constantly seek meaning within patterns.
As you embark on your Tarot journey, it's crucial to grasp that each card contributes to a larger narrative known as the Fool’s Journey. This journey mirrors a universal path of human growth, evolution, and self-discovery. Starting with The Fool, every subsequent card embodies unique archetypal energies, imparting life lessons that guide both the Fool—and by extension, us—through trials, triumphs, and profound insights.
The Fool’s Journey provides a navigational framework through life's complexities and uncertainties. As the Fool progresses, each encountered card deepens his understanding of himself and the world. Throughout this journey, he matures, learns, and gains wisdom until finally attaining a sense of fulfillment.
Understanding this approach has profoundly enhanced my Tarot practice, and it can do the same for you. Below, you'll find interpretations of the Major Arcana cards to help navigate this pivotal moment. Locate your chosen card among the descriptions provided below.
Although the name suggests otherwise, The Fool is a wonderful card to receive. It asks you to take a ‘leap of faith’ and jump into the great unknown - full of possibilities. While blind optimism can lead us to abundance and success, it can also have us falling to our doom. But what if it all goes right? What if it can only get better after this steep drop? The Fool is a magic child - he takes risks all while stopping to smell the roses along the way. He is aware that Spirit is on his side, ready to accompany him through every step of his journey, whether it’s shadows or sunlight. Life is full of uncertainty – constantly forcing us to renew our faith, and believe it will all get better in the end. Not even Spirit can determine the unknown, your destiny is in your hands. Will you let it be guided by fear and shame, or optimism and faith? Will you take the leap?
We meet the Magician when we need to be reminded that we’re born with all the tools we’ll ever need in this life. Because you are an alchemist: you bring together all the elements to make your dreams come true. Combining your physical (earth), emotional (water), mental (air), and spiritual (fire) resources - you have the power to create something greater than its separate parts. Don’t you see? You are the embodiment of all the magic and mysteries of the universe. Each of the primal elements exist within you. And while it’s a wonder why any of us are here, it's also a great miracle - proof of magic. When we forget that, the Magician appears and tells you to remember what extraordinary magic exists within your heart. It’s time to embrace it.
While the Magician teaches us the power of intention, The High Priestess shows us the power of our shadows. Our shadows are our greatest teachers. They hold ancestral knowledge, our inner child, and our deepest, most primal needs. The High Priestess urges us to lean into our subconscious and name what we really need right now. She asks us to look at our dreams for answers and find pockets of light buried beneath our shadows. The holder of this card is tasked with something very important. Sometimes our subconscious holds truths we’re not ready to bear. But take this as a sign to dig deep, look inward, and find what has been driving your actions. Be ready for a journey to untangle mysteries and bring your softness to light.
Have you been feeling disconnected from pleasure lately? If so, The Empress is your sign to give into life’s simple, everyday joys. Whether it's a serene getaway or the simple act of feeling the earth beneath your fingertips, The Empress is here to remind you that your existence is meant to be a delightful journey. She is Mother Earth, a creator and nurturer of all life, including yours. In a world built on transactions and exploitation, our connection to nature may feel distant, fading, or conditional upon our devotion. The more we disconnect from nature, the harder it is to stay connected to our pleasure. Nature, and the pleasure we get from it, is our birthright. The Empress created you, knowing you bring a unique energy that is deeply entangled in our ecosystem, and the broader universe. Meaning you should take up more space, and live life fully. Because your existence is just as much a part of nature as it is a part of you. Take pleasure in it.
While the Empress continues creating, and birthing new life, The Emperor is the structure supporting her. He says “I see you, Empress, pouring your entire self into creating the beautiful world we live in. I will bring structure to your creation so that we can sustain it, and we can sustain you.” The Emperor is divine masculinity. He is solemn and strong. He doesn’t control others, he only wants peace and order. With peace and order, The Empress can create freely, and bring more magic into our natural world. Creation without a plan can easily go stale. With this card, remember, you must hold your ground and be headstrong to attain success. If you have been in a deeply creative space lately, it’s time to start sharing your gifts with the world. Diligent planning will get you there.
It is time to seek mentorship and expand your worldview. The Hierophant is your teacher, mentor or advisor who breeds the spiritual order of our world. He is the counter to the High Priestess, who is the protector of the world’s mysteries. The Hierophant is the one who translates her teachings into tangible spiritual lessons for our world. He appears when we need to go back to the basics, our foundations, and see what truths remain from there. While we’ve evolved far from organized religion ruling our everyday lives (at least in the West), there are still many truths and lessons we can take away from these old schools of thought. Like how God is love or that forgiveness absolves our sin – these teachings aren’t limited to one religion, but rather, have shown up across many forms of spirituality since time immemorial. So before you dismiss traditional structures, revisit what you were taught. Re-evaluate them. What can help you now?
Unlike the name suggests, the Lovers card isn’t necessarily about love. It’s about relationships and the choices we make to support each other. The image depicts an altered story of Adam and Eve. In tarot, Adam and Eve were believed to have left the Garden of Eden, not because they were forced to, but because they realized their home was an illusion. People outside the garden were suffering, and they made the choice to leave together and use their divine gifts to heal the world. This card shows up when you’ve witnessed an uncomfortable truth, exposing all illusions. Now you must make a choice to either work through the problem or pretend it doesn’t exist. Going outside of your comfort zone is not easy. But it’s easier when you have people in your corner. Hold on to those closest to you for answers and support. It might be what saves you.
On your mark, get ready, get set – GO! After a long time of learning what it takes to make wise decisions, you must now put these teachings into action. The Chariot has granted you with divine power to chase your dreams. Spirit has witnessed how you’ve evolved since you finally started believing in your own power. The next steps in your journey will no longer be defined by what’s in your heart, but how you show up in the world. How are you contributing to the greater good? How is your soul purpose aligned with what the world needs right now? You are at the start of the race, whip in hand, and two sphinxes about to go in opposite directions. The intention behind your whip will determine the outcome of this race. Will you be able to maintain balance, bring the sphinxes back to center, or let self-doubt get in the way? Be decisive.
While the Chariot card speaks to our will and aspirations, the Strength card speaks to our inner vitality - the strength of our hearts. Notice how the woman in the card is being playful with the lion. She knows that when your heart and conscience is clear, nothing can harm you. Strength isn’t just about showing kindness and love, it’s about believing you’re protected by Spirit and therefore nothing can ever harm you. Faith takes a lot of strength. Are you strong enough? Can you withstand all the illusions and stay compassionate to those who do you wrong? Hold onto your inner light, it’s your strength.
It’s time to take a break. Your soul has been through a very challenging, and transformative journey so far. Now is the time to integrate what you’ve learned into all aspects of your life. Enlightenment without integration can easily be wasted. The holder of this card has been given an amazing spiritual gift. You’re being guided by a divine light on a dark and lonely path. The Hermit reminds you that faith is your superpower and your intuition is your roadmap. This is a sign that you need to hold space for yourself more often. Check-in with your body, and how you’re feeling daily. Meditate or pray or whatever tool you need to keep you centered on this introspective journey. Find your spiritual tools and build back better than you’ve ever been before.
You have learned and grown so much in such a short amount of time, and now, the Wheel of Fortune will decide what new evolution awaits. While the wheel can grant you great success and good fortune, it can also tip the opposite way. The good news is the wheel is completely unbiased, it spins and spins until fate decides where it should land. The bad news (maybe not for everyone) is that your karma is what keeps the wheel spinning. The invisible forces behind the wheel are weighing your karma, and whether or not you’ve actually integrated all the divine gifts you’ve been granted so far. Depending on the answer to that, the wheel may not land in your favor and force you to go through the same lessons again. Take stock of what you’ve learned, and ask yourself if you’ve been leading with your ego or with your heart. The answer will decide your fate.
Have you been acting in alignment with your highest self? Your highest good? Lady Justice is here to see through the lies we tell ourselves and judge your fate. She is meticulous, and unwavering. When she makes a decision, it’s final. There’s no going back. This card appears when Spirit wants to prepare you for ego death, and take you down a path filled with deep transformation and beautiful rewards. But are you ready for it? Are you ready to reap the rewards that come only after abrupt, and radical, change? Are you ready to transcend? Justice is watching, and no matter what, her decision will be fair. The only way to prepare for judgment is by being mindful of your actions. You are what you do, not what you say you’ll do. So act wisely.
While Justice decides whether or not we are ready for radical transformation, the Hanged Man is her verdict, and it’s not in our favor. But instead of sending you back a few more cards, and revisiting your most difficult karmic cycles all over again, she’s given you a chance to redeem yourself. This is your sign to put things on pause, reflect and rethink the path that you’re on. The Hanged Man appears after Spirit sees you taking a detour from your destined path, and is now forcing you to get back on track. So many wonderful things happen when we pause. Even 5 minutes of mindfulness can change the outcome of your day. We live very busy and overstimulating lives, so pausing can feel like a radical act. Even though he’s suspended upside down, nowhere to go, the leaves and the light around him suggest great abundance is on the way. He won’t be stuck for long. So take a beat, pause, and find where alignment is missing in your life so you can get back on the right path.
If the first thing you felt after pulling this card is fear, then that’s where you need to start. Follow the fear to its root, and see what you find. Ask yourself why death makes you so uncomfortable? Death is the only certainty we have in life, so why is it so hard to accept? And while this card doesn’t always mean death is upon you, it does signal a transformation on the horizon. Death and transformation are synonymous. We like to think of them as different, but they aren’t. When things die, they are reborn into something new. We should find comfort in things ending, especially things that no longer serve us. When things die, we make space for new and more beautiful things to enter our lives. What will take shape in this new life of yours? Will you hold on to your old, stale, or maybe, toxic self? Or will you transcend into something greater? It’s time to revolutionize your heart and soul. And death is the only way to get there.
A difficult life chapter has ended, and Temperance is the divinity that brings you back to life. Like the angel in this card, you are connected, resourced and supported on your journey to birth something new. With one foot on land, the other in water, and two hands continuously pouring life into another – you are designing the perfect elixir to transcend your soul. While the Magician teaches you that your very existence is alchemy, proof of the divine, Temperance is what elevates your gifts even higher. You have been given divine power to create life, or a new world, on your terms. The key is balance. If you have been overindulging or lacking moderation in your life, this is your sign to scale back. When we overindulge, it’s because we are seeking wholeness outside of ourselves. Temperance is here to remind you that you have everything you need and more to transcend to higher places. You are whole, and have the power to find balance in all aspects of your life. You are now entering a higher plane of existence. Drink the magic elixir, lean back and let it all unfold before you.
The Devil card reminds you to release your grip on material obsessions, fear and anxiety. They are not serving your highest good. We all have a little devil on our shoulder whispering intrusive thoughts every now and then. While these faint whispers are distracting, and sometimes disturbing, they also illuminate our truest desires. If we can withstand the illusions, what can we learn from The Devil? How can we allow the Devil to bring light to our deepest – maybe even darkest – needs? The Devil, after all, is a reflection of you. Just painted in a different, slightly terrifying, light. You must look at the root of your fears so that it stops controlling you. Because you are not your bad habits or toxic behaviors. It exists in all of us, and we have the power to turn the Devil away, no matter how tempting his offer may be.
You are in for a rude awakening. Things are about to fall apart, like a lightning bolt of clarity cutting through the lies and illusions, revealing your shaky foundation. All the false assumptions and lies will come crashing down leaving you alone in the rubble. The only thing you can do now is let it fall apart, and focus on rebuilding. It might not be what you want to hear, but receiving The Tower card means there is no choice but to surrender and let Spirit clear out what isn’t serving you anymore. After this tower moment passes - and it will pass! - you will emerge stronger, and even more resilient than ever before. You will evolve to new heights, just as The Temperance card has prepared you for. Get ready for the evolution, there’s nothing to do but jump ship and build anew.
After a long and relentless storm, the clouds have finally parted ways - revealing a new and enlightened path before you. Following the destruction and upheaval in The Tower card, The Star card brings reprieve and guides us back to the right path. You are picking up what remains from the chaos and building a new future. Your sense of hope and faith has been renewed, and now, you’re ready to receive all the blessings Spirit has been waiting to grant you since day one. This is the time to manifest, but first, we must heal. Heal in the most radical way possible. Heal like your life depends on it, because it does. When we’re stuck in survival mode, we disconnect from our intuition, and disconnect from Spirit. The Star enters our life when we need to pay attention to what triggers and haunts us so that we can grow from it. This is a reminder that you are bigger and brighter than your traumas. Like the brightest star in the sky, you are a beacon of hope, so shine bright.
While the Star reveals the path to healing, the Moon reveals the hidden depths that require our attention along the journey. It's time to confront the pains you've long suppressed and purify yourself in the gentle glow of the moonlight. If you don’t know what’s been at the source of your anxiety lately, The Moon asks you to find the answer within your body. Where have you been holding tension, and why? What memories or actions bring back the shallow breaths? What toxic narratives quicken your heart rate? The darkness of the night can feel overwhelming and scary, but we can find refuge in the moon. Mother Moon has been protecting us with her guiding light since before we discovered fire. She keeps us from being submerged in water every day. The moon is always on your side – ready to cleanse your mind, body and soul. Connect to this ancient power and heal the parts of you you didn’t even know were broken.
You’ve made it through the darkness of the night, and have entered an era of profound peace and happiness. The kind of happiness we feel on a sunny afternoon, walking through a quiet park and listening to birds chirp. The Sun enters our lives when we have healed and released any blockages to abundance. You have finally realized that abundance is not something that can be granted to you, you have to claim it. Abundance, whether it’s money, relationships or opportunities, is something we’re taught to earn. But it’s actually our right to have. You deserve love, stability and to live out your wildest desires. Like the child in the card, you have found beauty and abundance where others have overlooked. Your creativity is on fire, so set it ablaze, and witness how all the blessings begin to flow in naturally.
You are almost at the end of your journey, and have now reached your final judgment call. This time, there’s no chance of redemption. You’ll either pass judgment or be forced to revisit and heal your karmic lessons again. To best prepare, you must take time for serious reflection. Re-evaluate your circumstances and heal what’s been tipping you out of balance. To pass judgment, Spirit will judge the sanctity of your soul – witnessing the ways you’ve integrated your spiritual growth in all aspects of your life. As depicted in the card, we must present ourselves bare and unashamed to the angels and demons who circle us. You are being judged for who you are here to become, and if you are ready for a cosmic level-up. This is the moment you rise, carrying all the transformative work you’ve learned from Death, The Tower, and The Star, into this new, and possibly final, awakening. Accountability and forgiveness is the key to move forward.
You did it!! You made it to the end and The World is your trophy. This card is a sign that you have passed Judgement and Spirit has granted you with all the gifts in the world. You are one with the divine, cosmic forces of the universe and can now heal the world through your creations. Accept this mighty power with grace and humility, and it will flow through you effortlessly. While this is the last card of the Major Arcana, it doesn't denote the end of your journey; rather, it signals a transition. Tarot, much like life, is a series of cyclical narratives, weaving together universal archetypes and lessons we all encounter. Thus, while receiving The World suggests the closure of an important chapter, it invites you to embark on a new 'leap of faith,' akin to The Fool, to begin anew. Armed with the wisdom and strength bestowed by The World, you'll approach familiar lessons with fresh perspectives, leading to even greater prosperity. Your evolution knows no bounds. Best of luck as you step into this next chapter, carrying forward the lessons gleaned from your journey thus far.

so insightful thank you✨💘
Thank you for this breakdown ^_^
